Obama Leads the Poll Against McCain

Category: Recent Articles

Published: Tuesday, February 12, 2008

If the latest surveys are to be based on, the Democratic Party is at a tight stalemate for its presidential bid, and at a time which can be of historical importance to itself. Whichever way they decide, they are making one the firsts in American presidential elections: by having a woman or an African-American man as a viable candidate for the presidency. It is obvious that this issue is now pass, since the build-up has gone for so long that the only thing that's left is for the polls to be opened. But politicians need something to base their decisions on, and the results of the recent surveys only give the dilemma an increased difficulty, instead of providing a solution to it.

It appears that if the election was held today, Barack Obama would be the next American President, but not without a minimal winning margin. Whichever way the tide turns, it may turn out that the Democrats will have the winning vote this coming election. Of particular interest with this one is the ensuing rivalry between the two Democrat candidates, with Obama being the avant-garde, generation x champion, and Clinton with the maternal, 'I'll run this house like it was ours' approach. As a result, the voting population is so divided in their preferences that the whole affair may seem like a turf war in an ordinary situation.

The Illinois senator outdoes the New York senator in the bid for the votes of men below the age of forty-five, for moderates, and minorities (more notably from African-Americans), as well as taking a significant share in Clinton's primary support pool, the women. Clinton on the other hand has a stable base (thus far) with older women and Hispanic minorities. If anything can be gauged from these results, it's that it is still too easy to tell which one leads the general vote; but if any of them is pitted against the Republican Party's best man, Arizona senator McCain, the results are very much predictable, as based on recent trends.

Obama's let's get through this with a fresh start' outlook surely has hit the spot with voters who are tired of the tried-and-tested formula of American politics, and this may well be the reason for his popularity edge. The same goes for Clinton, who exudes the image of a stern, no-nonsense mother more than anything else. If the American public had their way, the country would have a President with a relatively fresh take on politics at the beginning of the next term. However, this isn't the case, and the decision as to who should represent the party is dependent on its members. The Democratic Party is leaning toward Clinton for the bid for some time now, while McCain is the bet for the Republicans, with the condition that he really steps on the pedal and get involved in the race come declaration time. While the turnout is far from predictable, it may not be too brash to assume that the voting public would have more reasons to visit the voting polls this season, compared to the previous one's either-or choices for the presidency.
